While the holidays may look differently this year it is still important to keep in mind the healthier options we can make during this holiday season. Whether you are cooking for one or a small group of people ChooseMyPlate.gov has come up with some helpful reminders from beverages to the main course.

Tweak the sweets: Fruits make delicious desserts.
Bake Healthier: Use recipes with pureed fruits instead of butter or oil.
Brighten your meal: Fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables.
Swap the grains: Choose whole wheat flour instead of white flour.
Cheers to good health: Drink water to manage calories.
Spice it up: Use spices and herbs instead of sugar and salt.
Skim the fat: Try skim evaporated milk instead of heavy cream.
Go easy on the gravy: A little bit of gravy goes a long way.

As MyPlate MyWins reminds us, "The holidays are often filled with time-honored traditions that include some of our favorite meals and foods. As you celebrate, think of little changes you can make to create healthier meals and active days."

Gobble! Gobble! Thanksgiving Menu!

11/21/2017

With the holiday spirit around the corner, here are some great recipes that will please the whole family.

Thanksgiving Menu

Here are 5 tips we found while going through the Thanksgiving menu provided by the USDA!
  1. Enjoy something special, even if you are cooking for one or two people. Instead of cooking an entire turkey, try purchasing a turkey breast. The turkey can be seasoned and cooked to perfection with minimal ingredients.
  2. Trying to please a vegetarian? Try a yummy baked tofu that can be served in place of meat.
  3. Trying to cut the fat? Remember you can still eat the mash potatoes, just try and use nonfat or low-fat milk instead of the full fat or 2% milk.
  4. Wanting to try something new? Try the protein packed Hearty Mash potatoes that include garbanzo beans.
  5. Don't forget your fruit! Try the Cranberry Sauce and/or the Apple Cranberry Salad!

Whatever you choose to eat, we hope you are surrounded by friends, family, or neighbors. We wish you a wonderful week and safe travels!

With the holidays quickly approaching many people are thinking of ways to still make healthy eating choices and still be able to enjoy all of the delicious seasonal dishes they know and love. Here are some helpful tips from the American Heart Association on how to choose and prepare your favorite dishes and still be mindful of healthy food choices:

• Choose wisely, even with healthier foods. Ingredients and nutrient content can vary by brand and preparation.
• Compare nutrition information on package labels and select products with the lowest amounts of sodium, added sugars, saturated fat and trans fat, and no partially hydrogenated oils.
• Watch your calorie intake. To maintain weight, consume only as many calories as you use up through physical activity. If you want to lose weight, consume fewer calories or burn more calories.
• Eat reasonable portions. Often this is less than you are served.
• Eat a wide variety of foods to get all the nutrients your body needs.
• Prepare and eat healthier meals at home. You’ll have more control over ingredients.
• Look for the Heart-Check mark to easily identify foods that can be part of an overall healthy diet. Learn more at heartcheck.org.

The American Heart Association has compiled some important information regarding healthy choices and alternatives for holiday beverages, family meals, ways to stay active, and delicious recipes in their Holiday Healthy Eating Guide.
